Fire Wardens Club introduced at Primary Schools

A district officer of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), (Mrs. Heather Williams), who participated in the "Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Training" held in Kobe, Japan in FY 2015, utilizes the results of the Training and in 2016 this formed part of the Jamaica Fire Brigade's Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Education Programme in Schools and a DRR Expo was also planned and implemented.

In FY 2017, JFB organized a Fire Wardens Club as an extracurricular activity in primary schools. The trial started at several primary schools from April 2017, and it was endorsed by the Ministry of Education and Information, and supported by the St. Catherine Parish Council and Portmore Municipal Corporation. From the new academic year of September 2017, it was introduced in full scale.

The Launch celebrating full-scale commencement took place at the Greater Portmore Primary School in Portmore on October 26, 2017. At the ceremony, eight club members (students) and principals and teachers who started disaster clubs at the pilot schools from April, gathered and demonstrated how to use rescue exercises and fire extinguishers.

JICA supported the DRR Education Programme in School's and DRR Expo for FY2016 through its Follow-up Cooperation Programme.
