The JICA President Award in 2017 was presented to Mr. Audley Gordon, Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA). The "Waste Reduction through Waste Separation, Waste Diversion and Recycling Pilot Project" which was implemented by NSWMA in 2016 with the assistance of JICA's Follow-up Cooperation Program, was selected as this year's laureate for JICA President Award, along with nine (9) selected projects from all over the world. The NSWMA implemented a pilot project within three (3) communities and collected 120 tons of recycled materials such as PET bottles, for six (6) months in the Kingston Metropolitan Area, where usually there are only several recycle bin stations. The achievement of the project was recognized by the Jamaican Government, and the number of communities increased from three (3) to thirty-three (33) to continue the project. The project was driven by rigorous public education campaign, including the development of a video, which was aired on radio and television many times.
