GDN-Japan Network Meeting

GDN-Japan Network Meetings are held bi-annually with the objective of reporting on recent activities of its network members and exchanging ideas.

The 26th Network Meeting

The 26th Network meeting was held on May 24th, 2013. Kaoru Hayashi, GDN board member, GDN-Japan adviser and Professor of Bunkyo university, made a presentation titled International Trends in Development Issues: From GDN PerspectiveE overviewing the themes and the discussion results of the past GDN Annual Conferences. He also had a debrief of GDN Board members meeting in January, 2013, followed by a GDN Japan Secretariats update on the 14th GDN Annual Conference to be held in Manila on June 19-21, 2013.

The 25th Network Meeting

The 25th Network meeting was held on December 10, 2012. Prof. Kaoru Hayashi, GDN board member, GDN-Japan adviser and Professor of Bunkyo university, gave an update on the recent activities of GDN Board members and headquarter. Then, GDN-Japan Secretariat members explained about the 14th GDN Annual Conference, which is going to be convened in 2013.

The 24th Network Meeting

The 24th GDN-Japan Network Meeting was held on May 25th, 2012. Kaoru Hayashi, the GDN board member and Professor of Bunkyo University, reported on issues discussed at the latest GDN board meeting which was held in January in New Delhi, India. Then, GDN-Japan Secretariat members explained about the 13th GDN Annual Conference, which is going to be convened in next June. Also, they shared the concept of the Parallel Session co-hosted with East Asia Development Network (EADN) in the Conference.

The 23rd Network Meeting

The 23rd GDN-Japan Network Meeting was held on October 28th, 2011. In the meeting, Kaoru Hayashi, the GDN board member and Professor of Bunkyo University, and the GDN-Japan Secretariat members reported on issues discussed at the latest GDN board meeting as well as at the Regional Network Partner (RNP) meeting which was convened in June in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The attendees exchanged their opinions over the future direction of GDN-Japan and shared information on recent personnel changes in the GDN-Japan Secretariat.

The 22th Network Meeting

The 22nd GDN-Japan Network Meeting, which had been postponed due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, was held on May 27th, 2011. At the meeting, reports on the 12th GDN Annual Conference, which was convened at Bogota, Colombia in January, were presented by members. Later, Kaoru Hayashi, the GDN board member and Professor of Bunkyo University, reported the strategy and plan discussed at the GDN board meeting. Also, the meeting covered debates on the recent activities of GDN-Japan toward the 13th GDN Annual Conference.

The 21th Network Meeting

The 21th Network Meeting was held on December 3rd, 2010. Dr. Masanori Kondo, Senior associate professor of International Christian University, made his retirement speech from GDN board member by the termination in the end of 2010. GDN-Japan decided to recommend Prof. Kaoru Hayashi, GDN-Japan adviser and Professor of Bunkyo university, as a new GDN board member. Prof. Hayashi explained about the detailed contents of the Parallel Session co-hosted with East Asia Development Network (EADN) at the 12th GDN Bogota Annual Conference.

The 20th Network Meeting

The 20th Network Meeting was held on July 16th, 2010. Dr. Masanori Kondo, GDN board member and Senior associate professor of International Christian University, gave an update on GDN's recent activities. Then, Prof. Kaoru Hayashi, GDN-Japan adviser and Professor of Bunkyo university, explained about the concept of The Parallel Session co-hosted as East Asia Development Network (EADN) at The 12th GDN Bogota Annual Conference.

The 19th Network Meeting

The 19th Network Meeting was held on February 19th, 2010. The report to participate in the 11th GDN Prague Annual Conference was made to network members with comments to appreciate the challenge and efficient organization of the Parallel Session co-hosted with East Asia Development Network (EADN) for the first time. Senior Associate Professor Masanori Kondo (International Christian University) gave an update on the recent activities of GDN Board members and headquarter.

The 18th Network Meeting

The 18th Network meeting was held on December 4, 2009. Dr. Masanori Kondo, GDN board member and Senior associate professor of International Christian University, gave an update on the recent activities of GDN Board members and headquarter. Prof. Kaoru Hayashi, GDN-Japan adviser and Professor of Bunkyo university, explained about the detailed content of The Parallel Session co-hosted with East Asia Development Network (EADN) at the 11th GDN Prague Annual Conference.

17th Network Meeting

The 17th Network Meeting was held on May 29th, 2009. Participants of the Tenth GDN Annual Conference (Kuwait) reported on their contributions to the Conference. Next, Associate Professor Masanori Kondo (International Christian University) gave an update on GDN's recent activities. Professor Kaoru Hayashi, Advisor to GDN-Japan (Bunkyo University) reported on the participants (PDF/404KB) and program (PDF/180KB) of the East Asian Development Network (EADN) Annual Forum 2009 that was held on May 21st and 22nd.

16th Network Meeting

The 16th Network Meeting was held on December 9, 2008, organized by JICA Research Institute (JICA-RI) as GDN Japan Secretariat for their first time. The Japan Economic Research Institute (JERI) was formally acceded to GDN Japan. The preparation for the coming Tenth Annual Conference in February 2009 in Kuwait City, and recent activities of GDN were reported. As for the mid-term strategy of GDN Japan, the proactive approach to GDN, utilization of GDN network as infrastructure were discussed.

15th Network Meeting

The 15th Network Meeting was held on May 9th, 2008. Participants of the Ninth GDN Annual Conference (Brisbane, Australia) reported on their contributions to the Conference. Next, Associate Professor Masanori Kondo (International Christian University) presented an update on GDN's recent activities, including GDN's new status as an international organization, External Evaluation, and its Strategic Review. Lastly, participants discussed the next GDN Annual Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Kuwait in January 2009 under the theme "Natural Resources and Development".

14th Network Meeting

The 14th Network Meeting was held on October 9th, 2007. First, GDN-Japan's hub presented GDN-Japan's recent activities including its coordination with the GDN secretariat toward the 9th Global Development Conference. Next, GDN-Japan's representative to GDN, Associate Professor Masanori Kondo (International Christian University) presented an update on GDN's recent movements, raising issues such as GDN's new president, GDN's international organization status, and introduction of GDN's new North American network lead by BREAD (The Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development). Lastly, members preparing to participate in the 9th Global Development Conference in January 2008 presented their session and workshop concepts and exchanged ideas with other members.

13th Network Meeting

The 13th Network Meeting was held on April 27th, 2007. GDN-Japan's representative to the GDN Board of Directors, Associate Professor Masanori Kondo (International Christian University) presented an update on GDN's recent movements. Next, members reported on GDN-Japan's contributions at the Eighth Annual Conference held in Beijing in January 2007 (See GDN Eighth Annual Conference for details). Discussions on the Eighth Annual Conference led into a discussion on GDN-Japan's future activities towards the Ninth Annual Conference to be held in Brisbane January 29th~31st, 2008 under the theme "Security for Development".
Finally, Asian Development Bank Institute made a presentation on their Asian Think Tanks Workshop scheduled to be held June 5th~8th, 2007 in Tokyo.

12th Network Meeting

The 12th Network Meeting was held on December 15th, 2006. GDN-Japan representative to the GDN Board of Directors, Associate Professor Masanori Kondo (International Christian University) presented an update on GDN's recent movements on obtaining International Organization status and on the selection of President Lyn Squire's successor. Next, there were three short presentations that informed of GDN-Japan members' participation in the GDN Annual Conference scheduled to be held January 14th, 2007~ January 16th, 2007 in Beijing, China. Lively discussions took place on future GDN-Japan activities focusing on the topic of sharing and disseminating information. Japan Water Agency was voted unanimously to join GDN-Japan.

11th Network Meeting

The 11th Network Meeting was held on April 14th, 2006. Reports on the St. Petersburg Conference of January 2006 were given by Dr. Masanori Kondo and others.
Next, members voted and ratified three institutional members that had announced candidacy to run the new GDN-Japan steering committee. Those institutions are IDE-JETRO, FASID, IDE-JETRO and JBIC Institute.
Lastly, members discussed possible themes for the plenary and parallel sessions for the next Annual Global Development Conference planned to be held at in Beijing in January 2007.

10th Network Meeting

The 10th Network Meeting was held on December 9th, 2005. Firstly, the article of association for GDN-Japan was voted on and ratified. Secondly, there was a vote on the election of Associate Professor Dr. Masanori Kondo of International Christian University as the representative of Japan to the Board of Directors of GDN. Next, members voted on the additional memberships of two institutions and five individuals to GDN-Japan.
After discussions on the process regarding GDN's recognition as an international institution, its means of fund procurement, and its future activities, there was an explanation about GDN-Japan's session planned to be held at the 7th Annual GDN Conference in January 2006. The meeting closed with a presentation by an individual GDN-Japan member, Dr. Kunio Takase of the International Development Center of Japan (IDCJ), on "Strategies for the Achievement of African Development,", followed by the exchange of related comments and opinions by the participants.

9th Network Meeting

The 9th GDN-Japan Network Meeting was held on April 22nd, 2005. First, there were reports on the Dakar Annual Global Development Conference by members of the JBIC Institute and IDE-JETRO, both coordinators of separate parallel sessions at the Conference. Next, Professor Kaoru Hayashi of Bunkyo University made gave a presentation titled "GDN and the Global Society". Lastly, some logistical points were discussed about the creation of a GDN-Japan article of association, and as well as the establishment of a GDN-Japan steering committee in addition to the existing general assembly.

8th Network Meeting

The 8th GDN-Japan Network Meeting was held on November 29th, 2004 in time for GDN Director Dr. Lyn Squire's and EADN (East Asian Development Network) member and, CSIS Executive Director Dr. Hadi Soesastro's visits to Japan.
In the first part, there were questions and discussions on GDN's step toward independence from the World Bank and on GDN-Japan's future activities. Next, participants were informed about the GDN session held at the meeting of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID) held on November 27th.
In the second part, Dr. Squire reported on GDN's activities regarding its recognition as an international institution, and on the relocation of the secretariat office from Washington D.C. to New Delhi. He also spoke about his expectations for and possible ideas for GDN-Japan's future activities.

7th Network Meeting

The 7th Network Meeting was held on April 15, 2004 at JBIC Institute. At this meeting, participants of the 5th Annual Global Development Conference presented their experiences and comments on the conference, which was held in New Delhi in January 2004 with the theme "Understanding Reform."
Later, members shared and discussed their ideas on future activities for GDN-Japan. Discussions focused on the GDN session planned to be held at JASID's 15th National Conference in November 2004, and on the GDN-Japan session for the 6th Annual Global Development Conference planned to be held in Dakar, Senegal in January 2005.

6th Network Meeting

On October 15, 2003, a GDN-Japan Network Meeting was held at JBIC Institute, Japan Bank for International Cooperation in Tokyo, taking the opportunity of the visit of Dr. Lyn Squire, Director of GDN, to Japan. The participants discussed what to organize for the Fifth Annual conference held in January, 2004 in New Delhi, India and GDN-Japan's future activities.
In this meeting, the GDN Secretariat explained GDN's current and future activities, and GDN-Japan's expected tasks and roles. On the other hand, JBIC reported GDN-Japan's current activities and its future activities. At the end, the participants discussed how to activate GDN-Japan Network in the future.

5th Network Meeting

On March 13, 2003, a GDN-Japan Network Meeting was held at JBIC Institute, Japan Bank for International Cooperation in Tokyo, to conduct feedback on the result of the GDN Annual Conference held at Cairo in January 18-21, 2003 and to discuss about the future GDN-Japan activities. There were 17 participants from mainly development-related research institutions of the GDN-Japan network. First, JBIC reported about the GDN Annual Conference in Cairo and explained about the future activities of GDN-Japan. Second, the Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO) reported the result of their parallel session in the Cairo Conference, and third, there were some announcements from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) and other institutions. Lively discussions among the participants were held. Many questions were raised on the future activity of GDN-Japan.
