GDN Seventh Annual Conference (St. Petersburg)

The Seventh Annual Global Development Conference was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, from January 19-21, 2006. About 500 participants attended the Conference including Former President of Mexico and Chair of GDN Board of Directors Ernesto Zedillo, Professor Francis Fukuyama of Johns Hopkins University, as well as other academic researchers, aid practitioners, and policymakers. Active discussion took place on the theme "Institutions and Development: At the Nexus of Global Change."

As for contributions by Japan, a parallel session was chaired by GDN-Japan, inviting a presentations and a discussion from within and outside the network on the theme "Harnessing Social Capital for Poverty Reduction."

The presentations by the finalists for the Sixth Global Development Awards took place during the Conference. Associate Professor Dr. Masanori Kondo of International Christian University, Japan, served as a selection committee member in the research section and Mr. Teruyuki Tanabe, Executive Director of the JBIC Institute, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), served as a selection committee member in the project section.

In addition, Dr. Masanori Kondo, GDN Board of Director since December 2005 representing Japan, attended the Board meeting that was held in parallel with the Conference.
