GDN Eighth Annual Conference (Beijing)

The Eighth Annual Global Development Conference was held in Beijing, China from January14-16, 2007. About 600 researchers, policy makers, and politicians including Former President of Mexico and Chair of GDN Board of Directors Ernesto Zedillo, and Professor Lawrence Summers of Harvard University attended the Conference. Active discussions took place on the theme "Shaping a Global Reality: The Rise of Asia and its Implications ".

As for contributions by Japan, two Parallel Sessions and one post-Conference Workshop were held by GDN-Japan member institutions. One of the parallel sessions was organized by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the theme "The Aging Population in Asia: Toward a Sustainable Welfare Society". The other was jointly organized by Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-Jetro), Foundation for Advanced Studies on International Development (FASID), and JBIC Institute on the theme "Cluster Development for Economic Growth and Poverty Alleviation" with a focus on case studies from China and Africa. The post-Conference Workshop was held jointly by GDN-Japan and member institutions of the ODA Research Cooperation System (ORCS) under the title, "Industrial Development, Trade and Investment Promotion in Africa: Lessons from Asia".

Mr. Teruyuki Tanabe, Executive Director of JBIC Institute served as head of the selection committee for the Seventh Global Development Awards, and served as host of the Awards Ceremony.
