Content of work

Through policy-oriented academic research, JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) intends to enhance the effectiveness of development cooperation in developing countries and contribute to formulation of the international development cooperation trend. Applicants to this post are expected to contribute to the promotion of JICA Ogata Research Institute research projects in collaboration with other researchers and practitioners.

The Research Assistant is expected to deliver the following tasks for the "Evolving Humanitarian Action For Forced Migration" Research Project:

1. To support in collecting and organizing relevant literature on the themes of Humanitarian Action and Forced Migration and the other materials needed to develop the specific case studies.
2. To assist in copy editing and formatting research papers, discussion papers, project webpage articles, and other research outputs of the project.
3. To coordinate applicable communications among the project members and participating researchers.
4. To coordinate and provide logistical assistance to implement the research project activities (i.e., meetings, seminars, workshops, etc.)
5. To assist in the dissemination activities related to the research project
6. To efficiently handle multiple project tasks under the guidance of the project leaders.
7.If necessary, support other tasks related to Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Support cluster.

Working status

In princilpe 2 days in a week
(There will be some flexibility in the number of working days and working hours per week depending on the applicant's schedule.)
・Working hour at the Institute: 9:30-17:45 including 45minutes lunch break.
・As we are utilizing remote work to prevent the COVID-19 infection, successful applicant(s) can consult with the project members after signing the contract. However, we do NOT expect that all operations will be carried out remotely throughout the whole contract period in terms of information security.

Required qualifications include:
(1) Master's degree (or equivalent, or soon to be) in the above research fields.
(2) Has a strong interest and sufficient understanding of Humanitarian Action and Forced Migration.
(3) Demonstrated experience in conducting qualitative research.
(4) English language skills sufficient for copy-editing of research papers (TOEIC score of 800 or above, TOEFL
(PBT) score of 574 or above, TOEFL (CBT) score of 230 or above, TOEFL (iBT) score of 89 or above, or equivalent).
(5) Japanese language skills sufficient for daily communication and correspondence are preferable.
(6) Open to all nationalities, but applicants must have a visa status that confers eligibility to work in Japan.


1. Position: Part-time Research Assistant
2. Contract Period: 1/November/2022~31/March/2023(tentative)
※The contract can be extended if both parties agree.
3. Remuneration: To be determined based on the research assistant's qualifications and in accordance with provisions of JICA.
4. Commuting expenses: To be paid.
5. Social Insurance: None.
