Effort towards reducing food and vegetation waste by creating sustainable recycling loop in Cameron Highland

JICA officially kicked off the meeting for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project in Cameron Highland, Pahang on 25 September 2019. This JICA PPP project entitled "SDGs Business Verification Survey with the Private Sector for Food Waste Composting and Creating of Recycling Loop" is joint collaboration between JICA, Merry Corporation and SWCorp Malaysia.

This business verification survey will be carried out for 2 years and 10 months from May 2019 till March 2022 and the targeted site will be at Cameron Highland. The kick-off meeting was officiated by Dr. Mohd Pauze bin Mohamad Taha, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Technical) of SWCorp Malaysia. Mr. Yasushi Matsuo, President of Merry Corporation, Mr. Shinsaku Fukazawa, Senior Representative of JICA Malaysia Office and guests from Kitakyushu City, Cameron Highland District Council, MARDI and Pahang State Government also graced the meeting.

The amount of waste generated in Cameron Highland is as high as 40 tonnes per day where 50% of the content is from food and vegetation waste. The available incineration plant and landfill site in Cameron Highland has faced extreme difficulties to process the large amount of food and vegetation waste, therefore the wastes are transported to another landfill that is about 250km away from the city. In order to assist and overcome the issues in waste volume reduction and waste separation, the objective of the collaboration is to prove the usefulness and advantage of the composting system. This survey will contribute to spreading food waste reduction and recycling, and to promoting the special cultivation with reduced chemical fertilizer using the compost in Cameron Highland.

This JICA PPP project is to emulate a successful collaboration activity of the previous JICA Partnership Program: Project for Improvement of Solid Waste Management in Fraser's Hill. The successful creation of effective waste management system in Fraser's Hill through the introduction of a composting method reduced in waste transported to landfill and recycled waste into valuable compost. Such knowledge and techniques will transferred to a larger scale pilot project in Cameron Highland.
