Tsunami Evacuation Drill Held in Gaafu Alif. Villingili

On 24th September 2017, first full scale school Tsunami Drill was conducted in Gaafu Alif. Villingili Atoll Education Centre organized by UNDP Maldives with collaboration from Red Crescent, Maldives Police Service, and Fire and Rescue Service by Maldives National Defense Force.

From JICA Maldives Office Resident Representative Mr. Hiroshi Saito and Ms. Haleemath Najula attended the drill. Mr. Saito participated in the drill with the students. A total of 550 students and 87 Staffs took part in the drill.

The drill started with a red alert received from Meteorological Center to Island Council and Councils warning of tsunami to the islanders. All the teachers transferred the students to safe havens such as Mosque and Hospital.

Many School children who participated in the tsunami drill were born after the great Tsunami in 2004. Still, their family stories are alive about how the tsunami swept over nearly every inch of the island. There was no high ground – or even dry ground to run to, because Maldives is barely one meter above sea level. Today, these children learnt how to recognize Tsunami warnings and where to evacuate in case of emergency.
