On 12 August 2017 (Sat), Department of Rural Development (DRD), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, organized the opening ceremony of the 1st Tube well for Rural Water Supply contributed by Japanese Grant Aid Assistance for the "Provision of Equipment for Rural Water Supply Project in the Central Dry Zone (Phase-II)". The total grant amount 1,242 million Japanese Yen has been utilized to procure 2 units of truck mounted drilling rigs, submersible pumps, drilling equipment and materials for 100 No of Tube wells in three regions (Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway Regions) in line with the Rural Water Supply 20 Year Plan (2011/12 to 2030/2031). The Grant Agreement (G/A) of this project was signed on 24-9-2015 between DRD and JICA.
U Shwe Ko, Representative of Phyuthu Hluttaw, U Myo Swe Oo, Representative of Mandalay Regional Hluttaw, H.E Dr. Aung Thu, Union Minister for Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Mr. Jun YAMAZAKI, Senior Representative of JICA Myanmar Office and Director Generals from DRD and Department of Agriculture, Head of Departments, District and Township level personnel as well as Village Water Committee and villagers attended the ceremony.
From the initiation of this 2nd Phase project up to now, DRD drilled total of 10 No of Tube wells, 3 No in Mandalay Region and 7 No in Magway Region respectively. This is the 1st operational tube well out of 10, DRD drilled 6 inches of borehole, utilizing drilling machine and equipment provided by the Project that can distribute clean and safe water to more than 3,000 beneficiaries for 950 Households at Hnit Kyat Khwe Village, Kyaukpadaung Township in Mandalay Region.
Prior to this Project, JICA had supported drilling 87 tube wells with DRD under the 1st phase of the Project, carried out from 2012 to 2015. JICA will continuously support the efforts of the Myanmar Government in rural water supply development to improve rural livelihood in Myanmar.
