The Ceremony for Official Inauguration of Electronic Interlocking System implemented by the Project for Installation of Operation Control Center System and Safety Equipment" held in Yangon Central Railway Station

The Ceremony for Official Inauguration of Electronic Interlocking System implemented by the "Project for Installation of Operation Control Center System and Safety Equipment" was held at the Yangon Central Railway Station on 16 June 2018.

The Ceremony was honoured by the attendance of H.E. U Thant Sin Maung, Union Minister, Ministry of Transport and Communications, H.E. U Phyo Min Thien, Chief Minister, Yangon Region Government, H.E. U Kyaw Myo, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Transport and Communications, H.E. U Zaw Aye Maung, Minister, Ministry of Rakhine Ethnic Affairs, Yangon Region Government, Daw Phyu Phyu Thin, member of the Pyithu Hluttaw, members of the Yangon Region Hluttaw, H.E. Mr. Ichiro MARUYAMA, Ambassador and officials from Embassy of Japan, Mr. Masayuki KARASAWA, Chief Representative and officials from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Myanmar Office, U Win Khant, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Communications, U Thurein Win, Managing Director, and officials concerned from Myanma Railways, Officials from Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), Managing Directors, Director Generals, and officials from the related departments under the Ministry of Transport and Communications and government ministries concerned, distinguished guests and media.

First of all, H.E. U Thant Sin Maung, Union Minister, and H.E. Mr. Ichiro MARUYAMA, Ambassador, delivered the opening remarks. Afterwards, Mr. Masayuki KARASAWA, Chief Representative of JICA Myanmar Office delivered the remarks. Subsequently, U Ba Myint, General Manager (Inspection) of Myanma Railways explained about the implementation of the "Project for Installation of Operation Control Center System and Safety Equipment.

Afterwards, H.E. Union Minister, H.E. Chief Minister, and H.E. Ambassador cut the ribbon to officially inaugurate the Electronic Interlocking System. The officials and distinguished guests inspected the Electronic Interlocking System at the Operation Control Center, equipment in the Signal Equipment Room, and Training Room.

The Grant Agreement for the "Project for Installation of Operation Control Center System and Safety Equipment" was signed on 24 March 2014. The amount of the Grant Aid is Four Billion Japanese Yen (JPY 4,000,000,000) maximum.

Under this Grant Aid Project, the old train operation control system at Yangon Central Station, which was in use since 1950, has been successfully replaced with the new modern electronic centralized train monitoring system. In addition, the Project provided point machines, signal equipment, and track circuits.

The Project aims to improve safety and facilitate the operation of MR by introducing new automatic warning devices at level crossings and upgrading the signaling and communication facilities. Furthermore, this Project contributes to the strategic objective of the Ministry of Transport and Communications to modernize the aging railway transport infrastructure in Myanmar by utilizing modern electronic control system for train operation, thereby promoting socio-economic development and ensuring safe and smooth travel and transport of the people of Myanmar.

Under this Grant Aid Project, automatic level crossing device has also been installed at Kyan Sit Thar Junction between Toekyaunggale Station and Ywathagyi Station in October 2015 for the safety of the public transport. Myanma Railways and JICA also conducted the educational awareness activities for the public and students on the importance of safety and the use of automatic level crossing device.

The Project for Installation of Operation Control Center System and Safety Equipment (Grant Aid) is one of the several projects under the cooperation between Myanma Railways and JICA. The Project on Improvement of Service and Safety of Railways (Technical Cooperation) was implemented from March 2013 to February 2016.

As for the other ongoing projects, Yangon Circular Railway Upgrading Project (ODA Loan), Yangon-Mandalay Railway Improvement Project Phase I and Phase II (ODA Loan), and the Project on Improvement of Railway Service and Rolling Stock Maintenance (Technical Cooperation), it is expected that the people of Myanmar can enjoy safe, convenient and modernized rail transportation.
