Reconstruction of Schools Started Officially

Ministry of Education (MoE) commenced school reconstruction through Emergency School Reconstruction Project (ESRP) in financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with ground breaking ceremony at Shree Kalidevi Higher Secondary School, Pyutar, Lalitpur on 19 May 2016.

Secretary of MoE, Mr. Bishwa Prakash Pandit, National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) Expert Dr. Hari Ram Parajuli and Vice President of JICA Mr. Hidetoshi Irigaki jointly inaugurated the reconstruction. The ESRP covers 6 districts out of 14 most affected districts viz. Lalitpur, Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa Gorkha and Makwanpur. For the 1st batch, out of 120 schools assessed, 84 schools have been identified feasible to start construction in 6 districts.

With the ground breaking ceremony at Shree Kalidevi Higher Secondary School, which was largely damaged by the April earthquake, reconstruction work in remaining 4 schools in Lalitpur district has also been started. Rest of schools includes Shree Mahakali Devi Higher Secondary School of Bhattedanda, Shree Vidhyadheswori Higher Secondary School of Ashrang, Jwala Devi Primary School of Thuladurlung and Pathpradarshak Secondary School of Badhikhel.

Along with the construction commencement tender announcements for remaining 5 districts are under progress. Reconstruction of schools in remaining districts will commence soon within 2016.

Central Project Implementation Unit (CL-PIU), implementing agency under MoE is recruiting international consulting firm for 2nd and 3rd batch school reconstruction that will focus on higher level schools. Detail assessment for 2nd & 3rd Batch will start from next 2017-18.

Earthquake on April 25th and May 12th 2015 inflicted the huge damage in various section of which 7,000 schools (source: PDNA) are destroyed and damaged.
