Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Nepal office duly handed over the landslide hazard maps of Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk districts to National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) amidst a formal ceremony at NRA today. The hazard maps were produced as output of "The Project on Rehabilitation and Recovery from Nepal Earthquake" by utilizing satellite images and other geological factors. These maps focuses on slope failure risks evaluated for each 50m x 50m square grid.
This study is first of its kind for Nepal under JICA's initiative, which assists NRA to identify the risk zones in and around the earthquake affected areas in order to provide appropriate information regarding the hazard risks to the residents. These maps are also to be utilized for the Rehabilitation and Recovery Plan for Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk districts.
Based on these hazard maps, JICA and NRA jointly organized Training of Trainer (ToT) regarding utilization of the landslide hazard maps, beginning from 22nd Jan to 2nd Feb 2017 including 2 days fieldwork in Sindhupalchowk. A total of 20 participants working in different government agencies and having experience in the related field participated in the training. The primary purpose of the workshop was to impart the basic knowledge for interpreting the Landslide Hazard Maps so that they can identify the settlements with high hazard risks. JICA expects the Government of Nepal to fully utilize the maps for relocation of high-risk settlements in the process of housing reconstruction.
JICA further plans to conduct another training session to support the Government of Nepal to formulate hazard maps for other 9 affected districts.
