Project for Development of Center of Excellence (CoE) for Technical Education

Strengthening the Technical Education and Vocational Training is one of the prioritized areas of national development identified by the Government of Pakistan. Enhancing human resource development especially through technical and skill development is expected to contribute the development of value-added manufacturing with enhanced global competitiveness in the county. Besides, the Government of Pakistan expects expansion of skill development programme will facilitate induction of ever-increasing young populations into the labor market. The Government of Pakistan drafted the National Skills Strategy 2009-2013 for the first time to set a direction of strengthening TVET activities. Establishing Industry Specific Centers of Excellence is one of the strategies of the National Skills Strategy. The project is to assist the development of center of excellence for mechanical and architecture courses which can provide the skill training relevant to the needs of industries.

Project Summary

The project is to develop Mechanical and Architecture courses of GCT Railway Road as a center of excellence which can provide quality in technical education based on industrial needs. Through the 5 years project period, Curriculum of these 2 courses will be revised with the participation of industries. Teachers at GCT Railway Road will be trained so that they could deliver the lessons newly introduced in the revised curricula. Collaboration with industries will be enhanced. Internship, placement and other activities are planned as collaborative activities with industries.


Project Highlights

Induction of female students into the architecture courses is one of the highlights of the project. First batch of 23 female students were inducted into the architecture course in academic year of 2010. It is expected the project will promote the equity of provision of skill development opportunities to both genders.
