Background and Objective

Photo

Lahore, the capital city of Punjab, has a population of about 7.2 million and plays an important role in the country's economy. However, urban infrastructure such as water supply facilities, sewerage and drainage system have not been improved to cope with the development and expansion of the city. Particularly, the silted or choked sewer lines and drainage channels are serious hazards to the urban environment. The situation aggravates in the monsoon season causing flooding in many places and resulting in not only impediment to traffic and business but also degradation of sanitary environment.

In 2004, Japan's Grant Aid for "The project for Retrieval of Sewerage and Drainage System in Lahore City" was implemented to mitigate inundation damage and to improve sanitary conditions at the frequently inundated areas in Lahore. In July 2007, Government of Pakistan request further assistance for renovation and procurement of necessary equipment to recover the drainage capacity in Lahore.
