Islamabad, August 4, 2016: Goal 12 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aims to ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) patterns, and the first round table to discuss the Goal 12 was organized to get relevant stakeholders involved. A series of round tables which will continued to be held is aiming to prepare an action plan to achieve the Goal 12 in Pakistan.

The "Round Table on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) "was held by Ministry of Climate Change, United Nation Program, and EU Switch Asia Program at the conference room of a local hotel on August 4, 2016.

At the technical session titled "Role of quality & innovation in achieving SCP "" chaired by Mr.Fazal Abbas Maken, Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, four presentations were made regarding the topics such as introduction of standards or labeling to achieve SCP, mainstreaming SCP in industrial policy, and role of education to achieve SCP.

Mr.Yasuhiro Tojo, Chief Representative of JICA Pakistan made a concluding remarks as co-chair of this technical session. Mr.Tojo mentioned three examples of assistance from JICA which are relevant to the topics.

Firstly, "Authorization Certificates of Pakistan Energy Efficiency Label" launched last month by ENERCON (National Energy Conservation Center) to promote energy efficiency in the home appliance. Secondly, an ongoing project with SMEDA (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority) to increase the energy efficiency in factories of automobile parts. Thirdly, projects in the area of Non Formal Education, which may be able to contribute awareness-raising by integrating the focus for SCP into curriculum.

The above-mentioned Goal 12 (aiming to ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production patterns) needs a transversal and cross-sectorial approach to address the issue. In this regards, multi-sectoral program portfolio that JICA implements in Pakistan is a great advantage to think about the solution. JICA will continue to participate in the discussions to develop Pakistani action plan on SCP.
