Karachi; 20 September, 2017: The Consulate General of Japan in Karachi organized an Official Development Assistance (ODA) press tour in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in which a group of journalists from various media houses participated.

The basic purpose of the ODA press tour is to increase media's awareness on Japanese Government assisted projects and its initiatives in Pakistan. Furthermore, it was also intended to inform the Pakistani people about the contribution of Japan and Pakistan's development in various areas.

This time, journalists, together with the members of the Consulate General and JICA, undertook the one-day tour and visited two project sites related to education sector. The project sites included "Upgrading Primary Girls Schools in Southern Sindh" constructed with Japanese Grant Aid, and Idara Al Khair School constructed by the Japanese Government under the Grant Assistance for the Grass-Roots Human Security Project (GGP).

The first site, a school in Wali Dad Jokhio, Jamshoro is one of the 54 schools being constructed under Japanese Grant Aid project with 1.8 billion Japanese yen (equivalent to around Rs. 1.8 billion). This Grant Aid has been implemented through two phases for upgrading primary girls schools into Elementary girls schools in Southern and Northern Sindh. Phase-1 has been completed with construction of 29 schools in Southern Sindh and the school visited today is included in this phase, which has already been handed over to the School Education and Literacy Department, Government of Sindh this April. Phase-2 for upgrading of 25 schools has also commenced in Northern Sindh. During the visit to the school, JICA staffs briefed about the background, purpose and significance of the project. The Grant Aid has been and will be used for infrastructure improvement and extension of school buildings and will also provide necessary school furniture and computers for IT education.

On the visit to Idara Al Khair School in North Karachi, management of the school expressed the appreciation to the Government of Japan for the provision of the building. Japan provided Idara Al Khair with US$70,821 (approx. Rs. 6 million) for "The Project of the Reconstruction of the School Building to Idara Al-Khair Welfare Society in Karachi, Sindh". The reconstructed school building has been greatly benefiting the surrounding population that had difficulty in accessing quality education.
