A view of workshop in progress
February 16, 2018: JICA Pakistan Office arranged a video conference workshop on National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) for Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and other concerned flood control and management authorities. The objective of the workshop was to observe the current status of PMD operations and to identify the missing links and necessary input from PMD.
Mr. Yasuhiro Tojo, Chief Representative JICA Pakistan office, welcomed all the participants and informed participants that through Japanese grant aid, meteorological radars have been installed in PMD since the 1980's and are now in replacement phase. New technology will be introduced to PMD and in order to maximize the new technology in its operation, it is important to review the current capacity of PMD in disaster risk reduction and management subject.
Government officials from Federal Flood Commission (FFC), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and Federal Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) along with officials from JICA headquarter in Tokyo and Disaster Management sector team of JICA Pakistan office attended the workshop.
Total 20 participants attended the workshop highly appreciated the effort of JICA for organizing such an informative and in-depth workshop which will be very useful for Pakistan Meteorological Department's future operation especially regarding the data calibration, forecasting and research and design for new projects. Through this workshop the participants were able to identify the current observation methods and also the missing acquaintances within the department. The participants appreciated Mr. Kunio Akatsu, JICA Senior Technical Advisor from JICA HQ and JICA Pakistan office staff to arrange such event to build their in-house capacities and skills in meteorology field.
The workshop was concluded with vote of thanks by Mr. Hiromu INOUE Representative JICA Pakistan office.
