Japanese companies made presentation about slope protection
Islamabad, 21 April, 2018: Pakistan is a natural disaster prone country, especially northern areas of Pakistan which have steep and harsh geographical terrain encountering natural disasters such as floods and landslides frequently. Road landslides not only damage the infrastructure but also cause severe road accidents. Many people have lost their lives due to landslides in northern Pakistan.
Since NHA has been struggling with frequent landslides, National Highway Authority (NHA) requested JICA to provide support and knowledge for permanent countermeasures instead of temporary measures to maintain the safety of damaged road. JICA responded the NHA's request positively and started Data Collection Survey in October 2017. The objective of this study is to address the road landslide issues on national and provincial highways in northern part of Pakistan and to provide appropriate permanent countermeasures against road landslides.
Severe road situation affected by snow melting along N15
On 21st April, JICA and NHA held a seminar to share knowledge and experiences of landslide countermeasures of Japan and present the progress of the survey. Kokusai Kogyou Consultants, a Japanese consulting firm who has been conducting the survey, made presentation on countermeasures and analysis for landslide in Pakistan. In the survey, the consultants firstly identified the severe landslide sites along N75, N35, N15, N45, N90, and N95 by using satellite images and then made slope charts, which is used for slope stability analysis in Japan, at the sites. Based on the site inspection, the causes of damage were classified into three; landslide, slope failure, and debris flow. Permanent countermeasure will be proposed when they finalize the survey.
Further, special guests from Japanese leading engineering companies which have vast experience of landslide protection were also invited to introduce landslide countermeasures in Japan. The presentations of the Japanese companies focused on technical explanation of countermeasures and high-tech equipment for each type of disaster such as slope failure, landslide, rock fall and debris flow by using examples in Japan which were quite informative and participants were attentive to the presentations. The companies participated in the seminar are as follows;
JICA will continue to strive hard to improve the situation of roads damaged by landslides, floods or earthquake in Pakistan by maximizing our cooperation through synergetic effect of Japanese ODA facilities.
