JICA reinforces its willingness for the welfare of disabled

PhotoProject on the Promotion of Social Participation of Persons with Disabilities at Abbottabad

Islamabad, June 8: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) expressed its willingness to the provincial Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, of its support in the replication of "Project on the Promotion of Social Participation of Persons with Disabilities" to at least two districts of the Province. This was stated by Mr. Toshiya Sato, Senior Representative of JICA during the third Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting that was held here at JICA Islamabad office on June 8, 2011. He said "The accomplishments of the Project in the city of Abbottabad were a success and we intend to negotiate with the Government of Japan to extend and start phase 2 at new locations that has yet to be decided." We will take necessary procedures for phase 2 of the project for which we have to seek official approval from the Government of Japan, he added.

The committee meeting was convened to analyze the progress of the ongoing "Project on the Promotion of Social Participation of Persons with Disabilities in Abbottabad" by examining the targets agreed in the last JCC meeting. The Government representatives from Directorate General Special Education (DGSE); Department of Social Welfare and Women Development (DSW & WD) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; District government Abbottabad; representatives from JICA and Project team members attended the forum.

While identifying the implementation of the National Plan of Action (NPA), The Japanese expert, Mr. Naoto Ikeda said "the Project has achieved targets beyond our expectations and that shows the commitment and willingness on part of all the stakeholders". We will visit all the provincial social welfare departments in Pakistan where we will share the findings and experiences of the Project, he assured the meeting dignitaries.

Prince Abbas Khan, DGSE while commenting on the project said "We are thankful to JICA for coming forward and helping us in the implementation of the targets set in NPA that Government of Pakistan is supposed to achieve before 2025"

Mr. Syed Zaheer ul Islam, District Coordination Officer, Abbottabad assured the committee members that the project will be continued with local resources even after its completion in November 2011.

The "Project on the Promotion of Social Participation of Persons with Disabilities in Abbottabad" is a joint collaboration between JICA and Government of Pakistan for the implementation of the National Plan of Action that is envisioned to eliminate all forms of discrimination against persons with disabilities.
