Islamabad, July 27, 2016:

The first Authorization Certificates of Pakistan Energy Efficiency Label for electrical appliances (fans) was handed over from the Minister of Water and Power at the conference room of Ministry of Water and Power (MoWP).

Since 2014, JICA has been providing technical cooperation to support National Energy Conservation Centre (ENERCON) to develop "Energy Efficiency Standards and Labeling Program" which was officially launched at the kick-off seminar in Lahore on 24 May 2016.

At the handing over ceremony, Mr. Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Minister of Water and Power, acknowledged the contribution of JICA for supporting ENERCON to launch the new regime, while at the same time, Mr. Tojo, Chief Representative of JICA Pakistan, honored ENERCON's facilitative leadership which brought about new framework towards energy saving society.

Mitigation of supply-demand gap is one of the top priory issues in National Power Policy 2013, and promoting energy efficiency and conservation (EE&C) contributes not only to address this issue, but also to improve energy security.

Besides, promoting EE&C is one of the smartest ways to achieve sustainable development by balancing environmental protection and economic growth.

In order to promote energy efficient appliances, "Energy Efficiency Standards and Labeling Program" has been introduced in various countries including Japan. ENERCON initiated studies to introduce the labeling scheme with the support of UNDP in 2010.

JICA has dispatched a number of experts to support related activities such as drafting labeling standard in specific appliances, reviewing application process, facilitating the coordination among stakeholders, sharing Japanese experience at various occasions including the kick-off seminar.

We continue to support Pakistan in materializing energy saving society in conjunction with both public and private stakeholders by utilizing Japanese experience and know-how in this field.
