The Philippines is an archipelago located at the heart of Southeast Asia. A cultural melting pot, the Philippines has vast influences from Asia and Western countries. In recent years, the country is considered Asia's economic bright spot, with its GDP growing at the range of 6%-7%, as well as high investment grade ratings from international credit rating agencies.
Historically a trading hub, the Philippines was one of the earliest global trade and maritime routes in the Pacific through the Galleon Trade in the 15th century.
One of the Philippines' greatest asset is its people known for their warm hospitality and cheerful attitude, making them among the happiest people on earth (Gallup Positive Experience Index, 2015) As a nation of vastly young population, the Philippines is entering a demographic sweet spot with working age Filipinos expected to rise to 67% by 2045 (Philippine Statistics Authority).
One of its major strategic development partners is the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) whose work in the country spans more than six decades. JICA in the Philippines supports inclusive and dynamic development anchored on key pillars: achieving sustainable economic growth, overcoming vulnerability, and peace and development in Mindanao.
