JICA has completed the kick-off meeting with the representatives from National Airports Corporation (NAC), PNG Air Services Limited (PNGASL), Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine) and airline companies on Monday 28/04/14.
The Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG) has been considering a possibility to borrow Yen Loan for rehabilitation of Nadzab Airport which was constructed in 1970s because its facilities are deteriorating with no major maintenance and there is no capacity for accommodating future demands. Therefore upon GoPNG request, JICA decided to implement the Preparatory Survey on the Project for Nadzab (Lae) Airport Rehabilitation. JAC/AZS/OC Joint Venture, consisting of following three consulting firms, has been entrusted by JICA to carry out the Preparatory Study as the Survey Team:
It should be clearly understood that, although results of the Preparatory Survey will be used as the basis for subsequent project appraisal by JICA, the scope of the Project covered by Yen Loan is to be finally decided during the course of the appraisal and shall not necessarily be the same as the results of the Preparatory Survey.
At the meeting, JICA survey team explained their work plan to the stakeholders. The stakeholders confirmed to provide their fully support for JICA survey team to implement the survey such as collecting data etc. From NAC as a main counterpart of the survey, acting Managing Director Mr. Joseph Tupiri expressed his expectation to the survey and mentioned that Nadzab airport can be future alternate for Port Moresby Jackson's Airport.
