Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) PNG Office under its Volunteer Program has being dispatching highly qualified and skilled volunteers to PNG for over 30 years in line with its development efforts.
One of the current volunteers working in PNG is Senior Volunteer Mr. Hiroshi Hasegawa who is a Japanese Language Lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), mainly lecturing vast courses in line with Japanese language and culture under the Linguistic Strand.
Last week Friday 13th June 2014, Mr. Hasegawa conducted a Japanese Language Speech Contest at the Arts Lecture Theatre at UPNG. The Contest involved students taking up Japanese Language courses to showcase to the judges their abilities in speaking the Japanese Language. The panel of Judges included the Chief Representative of JICA PNG Office Mr. Shigeru Sugiyama, JICA Administration & Development Manager Mr. Tony Ombo and School of Natural Science Senior Lecturer Dr. Ralph Mana.
The Japanese Language Speech Contest is proudly supported by JICA PNG Office in an effort to boost the students' morale in studying the Japanese Language and Culture. Prizes and Certificates were also awarded to students with outstanding speaking capabilities. Ms. Patrina Poe was the winner of this contest followed by Ms. Shirley Kana in 2nd place and Mr. Calvin Mana at 3rd place out of a total of 9 Contestants. After the contest the quests, participants, UPNG staff and the audience of the contest were complimented with Japanese sweets, snacks and drinks.
