The 5th MGMP Facilitator Training in Java Island

The 2nd year of PELITA has started in March, and the 5th MGMP Facilitator Trainings in 3 target districts (Sumedang, Bantul and Pasuruan) in Java Island were implemented in April. Since the 3rd Facilitator trainings, JICA requests the schools to appoint the same teacher to have open class on the 1st day and the 2nd day so that the teacher can improve the 2nd day class based on the discussion in the 1st day reflection. This is to raise the awareness among teachers that open class is not something special, but Lesson Study is for teachers to improve their daily classes by having reflection. Thus, teachers who open the class are expected to improve the 2nd day class, and without doubt, it is a huge pressure on them to do so, being observed by many other teachers. Although they were under pressure, teachers earnestly listened to the opinions during the reflection, and made efforts to improve the next day lesson.

In the 5th Facilitator Trainings, the subject of the open class was physics. Let’s take a look at the class in Sumedang District.

At SMPN 4 Sumedang, the class theme was about the nature of the light. Teacher applied the jigsaw method for this class. Students were divided into 10 groups, and each group conducted one of the 5 experiments explained below. They were expected to understand the results of all 5 experiments at the end of the class by listening to the presentations on the experiment results of other groups.

[Experiment 1]
Shine a flashlight on a ping-pong ball. What will be shown on the paper behind? Why is that? (Light is blocked by a substance)

Put 3 CDs in line. What the light looks like? What can you know from this phenomenon? (The light goes straight)

[Experiment 3]
Shine a flashlight on a mirror and a tin foil. What the light looks like? (Reflection and diffused reflection)

[Experiment 4]
Put a pencil into a glass with water. What the pencil looks like, and why? (Refraction)

[Experiment 5]
Light a mirror and measure the reflection angle. What is the relation between the incident angle and reflection angle? (Incident angle = Reflection angle)

Contrary to the teacher’s expectation, students were not interested in the results of the experiments by other groups, and they were unable to learn from other groups. Moreover, as experiments 1 to 4 were too easy, many students finished the experiment soon and spent their time in vain. These were pointed out by other teachers who observed the class in the reflection. JICA expert advised that in the 2nd day class, teacher herself conducted Experiments 1 to 4 to show them to the students as these are easy to understand and no need to spend much time on them, and all groups conducted Experiment 5. The next day, the teacher showed the 4 experiments to the students, and students were able to concentrate on the 5th experiment. Although it took much more time than expected for the teacher to conduct the 4 experiments, students were able to grasp the results of all the 5 experiments this time.
