PSBM: Monitoring of SMP Riyadul Ulum, Serang City

PhotoPrincipal who responded to PELITA team’s questions.

On August 30th, 2010, PELITA-JICA Team conducted monitoring to SMP as well as MTs in targeted area in Kota Serang. One of the schools was SMP Riyadul Ulum, Kota Serang.

In SMP Riyadul Ulum, the monitoring team interviewed teachers as well as principal.  It is interesting school because this school is a new school, established in 2008, but already has 86 students.  The principal said "Even though the school has simple facilities, we're trying to improve the teachers' quality. Without the improvement of teachers, the school will not be developed".  Another advantage of the school, students are not charged a dime too. This is because the existence of block grant from PELITA, BOS, Social Service, the community and foundations.  The school system is Boarding School; the students stay in school the whole time, and only allowed to go home once a month by taking turns with other students.

PELITA funds from JICA are used for Arts and Sports Week (PORSENI), Counseling Service to increase student motivation, teachers' training and improvement of school's infrastructure. The result is that teachers love the school and the quality of teaching is improved. Teachers give special attention to their students and make students feel more comfortable in school.

It is hope that this JICA funds will not stop because it is very beneficial for this school, the principle said at the end of the meeting.  In PELITA, besides receiving the funds, we also get better knowledge from PELITA in making proposals and financial reports as well as making administration and management in the school.
