Lesson Study New Sites : The 5th MGMP Facilitator Training

The 5th MGMP Facilitator Training was conducted in Padang City, Banjarbaru City, and North Minahasa District in August to September. From the 5th training, facilitators started to have a plan session on Day 1 after reflection for the lesson on Day 2 which is the same contents of the Day 1 lesson. The difference from reference sites is that there are 2 model teachers; one for Day 1 and another for Day 2, whereas in reference sites 1 model teacher conducts lessons on both days. It is because in the new sites, it is too much burden if 1 model teacher has to conduct the lesson for 2 days.

It is difficult for teachers in Indonesia to predict students’ reaction in class, to examine how and on which timing to give what kind of exercise to students, and to clarify the objective of each activity, because for them, “planning a lesson” means “filling the format” on objective, indicator, method, example of exercise, and evaluation indicator. Thus, even if they have a plan session right after reflection, it is difficult to design a lesson plan which includes the ideas to solve the problems raised in reflection.

The open class in the training in North Minahasa District was about “relation” in Mathematics. The model teacher on Day1 gave a complicated exercise to students without clear explanation on the definition of “relation”, so that many students were confused. Based on that experience, the model teacher on Day2 gave students very detail and step-by-step explanation. Thanks to that, there were fewer students who could not understand the contents. Then, another, new problem occurred. As the model teacher spent too much time in explanation, there was little time left for exercise. Also, some students lost concentration due to the long lecture. There is not a perfect class. It is Lesson Study that another issue emerges after overcoming one problem. Lesson Study is the accumulation of small steps through continuous cycle of open class-reflection-plan-open class.
