The 3rd Facilitator Training in Java Target Area

In November 2009, the 3rd MGMP Facilitator Training was conducted in Kabupaten (District) Sumedang, Kabupaten Bantul and Kabupaten Pasuruan. In the training, 32 facilitators (teachers) and 8 school principals from each kabupaten were trained directly by JICA Expert and each area’s resource university of UPI, UNY and UM.

The training was held on November 2 and 3 for Kab. Sumedang, 6 and 7 for Kab. Bantul, 13 and 14 for Kab. Pasuruan. The open class and reflection were conducted for each day of the training. After reflection, comments by university lecturers and JICA Experts were followed.

From the beginning of PELITA program, in the above 3 kabupaten, some new challenges have been introduced. Firstly, for the two consecutive days, a same teacher (facilitator) opens the classes for the same topic with different classes. The purpose of this challenge is to realize how the model teacher can make the most of what was discussed and suggested in the reflection of Day1 into the open class of Day 2. This system is working now. The facilitators now know that reflection is something to improve the lesson for the following days/classes.

Secondly, the topic of the open class is decided beforehand, so that JICA Expert can introduce the similar type of lesson design of Japan for facilitators. For example, the topic for the 1st Facilitator training conducted in May was “Photosynthesis” in Biology. The topic for the 2nd Facilitator training conducted in August was “Triangle congruence” in Mathematics. The topic of the training for this time was “Energy and Power”. You can find the examples of Japanese lesson design in the following files.

  1. Photosynthesis, Biology (designed by Dr. Masatsugu Murase) (PDF/31KB)
  2. Triangle congruence, Mathematics (designed by Dr. Masatsugu Murase) (PDF/175KB)
  3. Energy and Power, Phisics (designed by Mr. Ryo Suzuki) (Indonesian : PDF/79KB)

Many facilitators have steadily improved their capacity. Their comments in reflection are much deeper in terms of students’ understanding in their learning process. It also includes “why the students did/react so”. JICA Experts hope that they can keep this quality in their daily MGMP (Subject Teacher Training Forum) activities and daily lessons.
