Places where we held PRA Workshops

Before beginning group activities, a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) workshop is held with each community to discuss the natural environment that surrounds them and the problems that accompany rural life.  The workshop is often held in a school or church where a large number of people can gather, but if such facilities are not available, the group needs to share their ideas to decide on an adequate place for the workshop.  This type of experience, of not knowing what is possible, but sharing and discussing ideas together to find a good solution, is precisely what makes community workshops fun.

(Photo 1) The PRA workshop in the Salamanquita community.  The workshop site was the Health Center, but since there was no suitable wall for taping the manila paper it was taped to the Project vehicle.  Needless to say, it was very pleasant underneath the shade trees!  (March 3, 2007)

(Photo 2) The PRA workshop in the Nuevo Ocu community.  Here the workshop site was the local open-air tavern.  Instead of a regular table, a billiard table was used.  This was an unexpected location for a workshop, but there were many chairs and we had no particular problem in holding a meeting there. (Photo 3)  Another meeting in Nuevo Ocu community.  Since there were not many participants that day, the meeting was held in the outdoor kitchen of one of the participants.  It created a warm and friendly atmosphere for the workshop and everyone helped in preparing lunch.  The person in the foreground helping to cook the meal on an open fire is our driver, Mr. Richard.
