Terminal Evaluation of Project carried out

For approximately 3 weeks, during February and March 2011, the Joint Evaluation Team, composed of the JICA evaluation team (4 persons) and the Panamanian evaluation team (4 persons), implemented the Project's terminal evaluation. The purpose of this evaluation was to confirm the advances made in the Project activities and the results achieved during the 4½ years of Project implementation, likewise, to hold discussions with the persons related to the Project, both from the Panamanian and Japanese sides, to agree upon the orientation for activities to be carried out during the Project's remaining 6 months, and after Project termination.

The evaluation results confirmed that the Project activities are being carried out as planned and that each community is adopting the environmentally friendly farming techniques. Therefore, it is foreseen that the Project Purpose will be achieved by the end of the Project. Also, through field visits made to the Project's object communities, the evaluation team saw that the inhabitants of each community could explain the techniques and knowledge introduced by the Project, in this way confirming that they understood the importance of watershed conservation in the implementation of their activities. This increased environmental awareness of the inhabitants could also be said to be the fruit of the energetic efforts of ANAM, on the Panamanian side, and the Project's Japanese members in achieving the difficult task of harmonizing the conservation of the Canal watershed with the farmers' production activities.

There are only 6 months left until the Project ends. While keeping a clear view of the larger goal, which is the conservation of the Canal watershed, it is hoped that the Japanese personnel, as Project partners, will continue to invest all their effort until the end so that the Panamanian side will be able to carry on the activities by themselves after the Project's termination.
