Training on Strengthening of Self-help Groups/Organizations (SHGs/SHOs) of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)

The trainings on Strengthening of Self-help Group/Organizations (SHGs/SHOs) of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) were conducted in Iloilo from September 16 to September 18, 2010 and Cagayan de Oro from September 21 to September 23, 2010.

Training Objective:

To equip municipal PWD leaders and families of PWDs with relevant knowledge/skills/attitudes to strengthen their SHG/SHO of PWDs.

Expected Training Outcome:
[Short-term Outcome Expected]

The participants of this training will:

  1. Hold ownership and motivation towards their municipal association of PWDs;
  2. Commit themselves and become active in the association activities. (e.g. joining/organizing their regular meetings, visiting other PWDs in their community to invite them for the Association); and
  3. Spontaneously work for issues related to PWDs and NHE as a member of the association.

[Long-term Outcome Expected]

Associations of the PWDs in New Lucena and Opol will be strengthened by the ex-participants of this training, who may continue to act as described above.

Learning from the Theories and Practices of  "Community Organizing" in the Philippines.

The training was handled in a participatory manner. Various methods were used in the workshop (e. g. role playing; case analysis; small group discussions; plenary sessions)

Through this training, the participants deepened their understanding of the process of community organizing; identified common problems/issues in community organizing; enhanced skills in actual community organizing work; and heightened their commitment to promote the empowerment of other people and PWDs in their community.
