Forage crop production

photDr. Anh Part time cp of the Project is explaning the role of forage crop for farmers in Khoai Chau – one of project target areas.

photphotAlong with theory lectures for NTs, they also had chance to study in the field. Mr. Kikuchi is lecturing on how to scatter seed and how to plant the king grass at the yard for demonstrating.

photphotThis is soil map and climatic map show details the type of land, characteristics of land and climate, rainfall by province in Vietnam.

2006 is an initial year of the Project thus we had not carried out LT training course yet. During Mr. Kikuchi Seijun’s assignment in the Project, he studied the climatic and soil situation in the target areas, and selected primary recommended grass species which are appropriate in each area, studied the present situation of the forage crop production technology and technology extension in Ba Vi center. And also he visited 4 project target areas with long term expert and project counterpart from NIAH – Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh. He made study on forage crop cultivation and feeding technologies in these areas. Through study he realized that the cultivation is mostly made by animal or manpower. Many farmers cut the king grass is too near the ground and fed to dairy cattle without chopping and seldom give chemical fertilizer to the grass-land . Regarding the human resources, due to the study on farmer’s needs for technical improvement and the possibility of availability of forage seeds, many farmers are lacking of knowledge about forage crop. Although both farmers and extension workers are recognizing about the shortage of feeding forages, they don’t know how to actually improve the technology. About training for Project counterparts, as far as I can see, almost CP’s major is not on forage crop, their knowledge is not sufficient so Mr. Kikuchi just give lecture at a basic level base on his understand checking out.

Beside those mentioned activities, Mr. Kikuchi also set up one simple practice yard for Napier grass and Brachiaria brizantha demonstration behind the project office in collaborated with forage crop production in Ba vi Center. Mr. Kikuchi also published one manual on forage crop production (to see more detail this technical manual click here)

Mr. Kikuchi ‘s activities assisted by project part time counterpart and full time counterpart: Mr. Dao Duc Bien, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh from NIAH, Mr. Phung Quang Truong and Mr. Nguyen Hung Son.
