Silage making demonstration in Vinh Tuong (25 June 2008)

Silage making using local grass materials is not a common practice in Vietnam. It is also the same situation in Vinh Tuong, one of the Project target areas.

As common conditions in the Northern part of VietNam experiencing hot and humid climatic conditions during summer seasons which last as long as more than six(6) months starting from April until the beginning of October, it is in this long season that dairy farmer there may try to preserve some of their abundant grass production for coming winter ( or cooler ) season when limited grass feed is available.

Upon above understanding, the project tried a demonstration on silage making using local materials in Vinh Tuong, hoping that the dairy farmers in the area could notice the importance of utilizing their locally available feed materials to be preserved for more stable dairy farm operation throughout a year.

Some of the materials are:

1) Grass material: locally grown king grass
2) Chopping machine: made in a local shop
3) Silo: metal sheet & nylon for sealing and sand bags locally available.
