Basing on what had seen in Dairy farm practice in the project’s target areas, the project’s experts recognized that farmer’s practice on calf rearing was still one of the most concerning matters. Actually, the way of current calf rearing practice, 4 months raising calf by fresh milk, was very waste and affected to farmer income much. At the same time, this way was not practiced by international dairy farmers like Japanese any more. Thus, it was time to change the way of calf rearing practice of Vietnamese dairy farmers.

The farmer seminars were held in two target areas: on 7th October, 2008 in Moc Chau and on 21st October, 2008 in Vinh Tuong. During the seminars, the project’s expert were trying to introduce a new method for calf rearing, which had the main target to reduce the time of raising calf from 4 months currently to 2 months only. The expert explained farmers the strong points of this method in compared to current applied method and instructed farmers steps what they had to follow in order to reduce the time of calf raising by fresh milk. He suggested farmers to start giving concentrate feed, hay and milk replacer for calf to decrease the cost and develop calf rumen.

With actual experience and simple, understandable explanation, the seminars attracted farmers. They raised many questions regarding to this field and other fields, which were their difficulties & problem they faced with everyday in their farms. The project’s experts and counterparts answered and satisfied their wondering. As a result, the seminars finished successfully.

For a better instruction for farmers about calf rearing method, the project published one technical leaflet. This leaflet received a good respond from farmers and local technicians in the project’s target & cooperation areas and other dairy raising areas in the North of Vietnam.
