Major Projects in Rwanda

Project for Strengthening the Capacity of Tumba College of Technology (TCT)

Rwanda has committed itself to a knowledge-based and technology-led economy as stipulated in its national development plan Vision 2020. There has been a serious gap in national human resources capacity to meet this goal. This project aims are to strengthen capacity of Tumba College of Technology as a practical technical education institute and to develop human resources through its technical education.

Major achievements in 2008:

  • Institutional Capacity Building: Three educational and training departments, Electronics and Telecommunication (ET), Information Technology (IT) and Alternative Energy (AE) have been set up within the TCT.
  • Technical Advisory Group (TAG) was established to provide the IT department with guidance to ensure that IT related academic programs are practical and meet market demand.
  • Joint Coordinating Committee: The first and second Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meetings have been conducted with great success. The second JCC meeting in November 2008 resulted in consensus on the achievements of the Project’s first stage. The achievements include the improvement of school management and facilities and improved capacity of TCT staff.
  • Workshops: Alternative energy workshops were organized by the AE department to introduce its activities. Case studies and lessons-learned were also shared by JICA’s experts from Japan.
  • The IT department participated in JICA’s group training on Web-based Contents Management System (CMS) Technology.
  • Training kits for hands-on skills trainings were provided to the ET department.
  • The TCT participated in the Second Education Expo entitled “Education a Key to Regional Integration” in Uganda, which demonstrated the solar system, a wireless radio, an intercommunication system and network software.
  • TCT’s Kigali Satellite Campus was established in the compound of the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) Centre for Innovations and Technology Transfer (CITT). The Satellite Campus is expected to enhance partnerships amongst the TIT, private sectors, public institutions and academia.
