Two Major Social Infrastructure Projects to the Eastern Province
New Loan Package: 36.7 billion yen for the development of Sri Lanka

An Official Development Assistance (ODA) Loan package to the Government of Sri Lanka, amounting to Yen 36,664 million (approximately Rs.46 billion) will finance four major social infrastructure development projects: ”Provincial/Rural Road Development Project (Central, Sabaragamuwa & Eastern Provinces)”, ”Eastern Province Water Supply Development Project”, ”Kandy City Wastewater Management Project”, and additional financing for ”Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project”. The loans are offered on highly concessionary terms and administered by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

These four projects are formulated jointly by the Government of Sri Lanka and JICA in accordance with the priorities identified by the Government of Sri Lanka. They will contribute to development of social and economic infrastructure to meet basic human needs in the rural areas as well as the conflict affected Eastern Province.

The Loan Agreement for the 40th Package of Official Development Assistance Loan to the Government of Sri Lanka was signed on 26th March 2010, in Colombo, Sri Lanka between, Mr. Akira Shimura, Chief Representative, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Dr. P.B. Jayasundera, Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Planning on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka.
