The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) together with the Jaffna District Secretariat will organise a workshop titled, "Development in Jaffna" on Saturday 19 February 2011 in Jaffna, providing stakeholders with an opportunity to share visions and propose necessary actions for the development of the district, in North of Sri Lanka.
Since March 2010, JICA has been supporting the implementation of a programme to plan the rapid development and reconstruction of the Jaffna district. Under this programme, pilot projects in various sectors are being implemented in the district and taking into consideration lessons learnt from these projects, a roadmap (a detailed plan) to promote post-conflict rehabilitation in the district is under preparation. At the workshop, JICA will present findings from studies and also lessons learnt from pilot projects with regard to socio-economic activities in Jaffna.
Stakeholders, from the Government of Sri Lanka, private sector, donor community, civil society and non governmental organizations, will discuss visions and actions for further rehabilitation and development of agriculture, fisheries and manufacturing industries as well as communities in the district. The final recommendations will be incorporated into the roadmap which is to be finalized in August this year.
JICA's assistance to the conflict-affected communities in the Northern Province also includes sustainable improvement of livelihoods, restoration of social and economic infrastructure and the enhancement of community capacities.
