Message from the Chief Representative

Thank you for visiting the website of JICA Saint Lucia Office.

Saint Lucia is a country located in the Caribbean Sea with an area of about 620 km2 and a population of about 180,000, which is almost the same as Awaji Island in Japan. The name of Saint Lucia is said to be derived from the fact that the day Columbus discovered the country was the holiday of Saint Lucia, famous for the Italian folk song "Santa Lucia". It is a country with a warm climate, scenic land, and a place where cheerful and kind people live.

Our office was established in 1995 when the first Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) was dispatched to Saint Lucia. Now it covers 10 countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Guyana and Surinam in addition to Saint Lucia.

Surrounded by beautiful sea, these Caribbean countries are visited by many tourists every year. At the same time these countries are facing with many problems such as heavy dependence of economy on tourism sector, natural disasters (hurricanes, volcanic eruptions etc.), deterioration and depletion of natural marine resources and energy supply centered on fossil fuels. Governments and regional organizations such as Caribbean Community are working to solve them.

Under these circumstances, JICA has been supporting these countries for many years, mainly in the fields of disaster prevention / environment and fisheries through construction of facilities, acceptance of trainees in Japan and dispatching JOCV. We will work together to make the best use of the human networks and relationships of trust cultivated through these past cooperation, and to continue to contribute to the development of the Caribbean region while seeking the support from private companies, universities and NGOs. In addition, we would like to do our utmost to promote friendship between Japan and the Caribbean region through the dissemination of these efforts in both Japan and the Caribbean region.
