Inauguration Ceremony for "The Project for Reinforcement of Power Distribution in Zanzibar Island"

On 11 June 2013, JICA and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar Inaugurated the Project for Reinforcement of Power Distribution in Zanzibar soon after the completion of construction which started from 10 January 2012 to 31 March 2013.

The project included the upgrading of the Mtoni Substation from its previous capacity of 40MW before the commencement of the project to a capacity of 100MW, after the construction. The project also included the construction of two new substations at Welezo and Mwanyanya and the upgrading of three important Transmission lines (33kV) of 80km in total length.

Soon after the completion of the project power supply in Unguja Island has been improved significantly and the problem of overloading due to aging power facilities has been reduced drastically.
