Launching of the New Rusumo International Bridge to connect Tanzania and Rwanda to start on 5th November 2013

The Project for Construction of Rusumo International Bridge and One Stop Border Post (OSBP) Facilities is Japanese Government Funded Project for the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Rwanda.

After the commencement of works in March 2012, the works have progressed well and as of October, 2013, 62.7% of the works had been completed, which is 2.5% ahead of the planned schedule.

The new bridge steel girder (80m long) manufactured in Japan has already arrived at the site, just behind abutment on the Rwandan side and the first launching of the girder with launching nose (pushing the girder and nose to the direction for abutment in Tanzanian Side) will be taken place from 1400hrs on 5th November, 2013. The launching speed will be 5 meters/minute and 18 meters will be launched on this date, at a time duration of about 90 minutes.

The launching will be conducted in phases and it is expected that the entire bridge girder will reach the abutment on the Tanzanian side in February, 2014.

Interested Press members are welcomed at the site on 5th November, 2013.

All works, including the construction of OSBP facilities are planned to be completed in November, 2014. After the completion, it is expected that the Project will contribute for the economic development of Tanzania, Rwanda and other neighboring countries through trade facilitation.
