Disaster Training with Puppets in Ankara

JICA Alumni Association organized an activity on "Disaster Training with Puppets" for pre-school students in Ankara on May 09, 2017. The training was implemented by Ms.Gulsun YILDIRIM, the master teacher in Yalova who participated in training in Japan in order to disseminate the knowledge and experiences to other teachers of the project within the scope of "School Based Disaster Education Project" (2010-2014). Besides, Ms. YILDIRIM was one of the winners of "Action Plan Contest" which was implemented first time in 2015 targeted to encourage ex-participants to develop action plans. The theme of Ms. YILDIRIM's action plan was "Disaster Training with puppets" and JICA Alumni supported creation and modelling of the puppets. The importance of usage of puppets in disaster training especially for pre-school children is that the children can easily empathize with the puppets in their own world, see them as friends, puppets have an encouraging effect on their fantasy worlds, which shows disaster is not a fearful situation and leads to rapid behavior development. At the activity, around 70 pre-school students learnt what to put in earthquake bag, what to do during the flood and earthquake etc. with fun.
