Seminar & Panel on "Urban Archeology and Transportation Projects" -Contribution of Marmaray [1] and Metro Excavations- was held on March 2, 2010

  1. On March 2, 2010 seminar & panel titled "Urban Archeology and Transportation Projects -Contribution of Marmaray and Metro Excavations-" was held at Istanbul Archaeology Museums in Istanbul, hosted by JICA, General Directorate of Railways, Harbors and Airports Construction (DLH), Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and Istanbul Archeology Museums.
  2. In seminar session approximately 180 people participated in. The audience was highly interested in the seminar. After the opening remarks, the Museum made a presentation about the archeological objects which were discovered at Marmaray and Metro Excavations, and emphasized the importance of these findings. JICA Expert Mr. Saito also made a presentation about contribution of similar projects to archaeology practiced in Nara-Prefecture, which is one of the most historical places in Japan, and shared his experiences on the subject.
  3. In panel discussion, the panelists emphasized the harmony between Marmaray and Metro Projects, and urban archeology. They stated that the preservation of historical heritages and development should not be competitors so one cannot be sacrificed for the other, and balance can be achieved. One of the important points was that they discussed how to exhibit the objects which were discovered during construction of both projects.
  4. Media was highly interested in the seminar. Many journalists attended the seminar and the articles were published in the newspapers and Internet HPs. 5. The seminar belongs to series of the events of "The Japan Year 2010 in Turkey [2]" which is the 120th friendly relationship anniversary between Japan and Turkey.
