Grant Agreement for the Project for Expansion of the Cold Chain concluded with the United Nations Children's Fund

On 19 July 2013, The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Zambia Office signed a Grant Agreement for the Project for Expansion of the Cold Chain to provide grants of up to 221 million Japanese yen with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) with a witness of an Honorable Minister of Community Development Mother and Child Health.

The purpose of this grant is to provide 570 refrigerators for vaccine storage (520 for health centre facilities and 50 for district health offices) and to perform training course on the maintenance of cold chain system for technical staff at the district level. In Zambia, the number of children dying from vaccine preventable diseases is still high, and there is an urgent need to improve the cold chain system to promote immunizations for newly-born children. With this grant, about 550,000 newly –born children are expected to get immunized against vaccine preventable diseases every year till 2015, and the number of children dying from the diseases would be reduced.
