Ethiopia is a large country with a population of approximately 83 million, located in the Horn of Africa. The gross national income (GNI) per capita is US $390 (2010), and a high economic growth averaging more than 10 percent has been sustained since 2004. Nevertheless, the economic environment remains fragile due to agriculture dependent on rain-fed cultivation by small-scale farmers, an immature manufacturing industry, inflation, and an increasing amount of foreign debt. Ethiopia also faces severe situation such as chronic food shortages, an inadequate supply of safe water, undeveloped social infrastructures such as roads and electricity, and limited social services such as education and health services. JICA's cooperation is primarily focused on 1) agriculture and rural development, 2) private sector development, 3) infrastructure development and 4) education.
