JICA's Past Activities in Liberia 1976-2006

232 Liberian Trainees (1976-1990)

Since 1976 until 1990 JICA accepted 232 Liberian personnel to Japan or third countries to transfer knowledge and skills to them in various fields to contribute the development of Liberia.

170 Japanese Young Volunteers (1979-1990)

Since 1979 JICA dispatched more than 170 young volunteers called Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) to all over Liberia as part of technical assistance in such field as science and math teaching, agriculture, auto maintenance and maternity health care.

About 71.3 million US$ of Grant Aid and Technical Cooperation (1981-1989)

Improvement of Electric Power Supply in MonroviaImprovement of Electric Power Supply in Monrovia

Since 1981 Japanese Government through JICA supported 7.13 billion yen (about 71.3 million US $) to offer grant aid and technical assistance to Liberia. The main projects are as follows:

  • Establishment of a Hospital at Monrovia (1981-82)
  • Food Assistance (1981- 82)
  • Medical Facilities Improvement Project (1983)
  • Educational Television Broadcasting Network (1985-86)
  • Aid for Increase of Food Production (1985-89)
  • Improvement of Electric Power Supply in Monrovia (1987-88)

About 68.5 million US$ of Loan Aid (1974-1989)

Since 1974 Japanese Government provided 6.85 billion yen (about 68.5 million US $) of loan aid to Liberia. The main projects are as follows:

  • Extension of Facilities for Telecommunication (1974)
  • Project for Construction of National Road (1978)

Others: About 5.5 billion US$ of Multilateral Assistance to Liberia (1990 - 2006)

Though bilateral assistance between Liberia and Japan was suspended, Japan has provided emergency assistance through multilateral assistance during the civil war. Since 1990 until 2006, Japan assisted about 5.5 billion US$ to Liberia via international organizations such as UN agencies, ICRC and so on.
