Activities in Rwanda

Since reopening its office in 2005, the JICA Rwanda Office has implemented more than twenty projects on the ground, including those supported by Japanese volunteers through Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) - JICA's volunteer program. Currently, approximately nine activities are ongoing in the three priority areas:

• Strengthening Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education (SMASSE Rwanda) Project
• Project for Strengthening the Capacity of Tumba College of Technology (TCT)
• Training course related to education, and training in science and technology
• Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV)

• Improvement of Water Supply and Sanitation in the Eastern Province
• Study for the Improvement of the Rural Water Supply in Rwanda
• Training Course related to rural Developmetn in the Eastern Province
• Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV)

• Capacity Building for the Customs Administrations of the Eastern African Region (Phase 2)
• Training course related to improvement of economic infrastructure and business development
• Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV)

While centering our work in the three priority areas, the JICA Rwanda Office also responds to the needs on the ground where development support is required. Other development activities currently in place, including those by JICA volunteers, are:

• Support of Child-Friendly Environments through Community Participation in Rwanda’s Earthquake-affected Western Province
• Follow-up cooperation for Skills Training for the Reintegration of Demobilized Soldiers with Disabilities

Throughout project activities at the country level, our comprehensive approach to Rwanda’s national development also addresses global challenges identified by JICA as nineteen corporate thematic issues - the top development priorities around the globe.
