Concurrent with the abolishment of apartheid-related laws in 1991, JICA started its activity in South Africa by sending a survey mission to South Africa, followed by accepting training participants in Japan in 1993. JICA South Africa Office was established in 1997. The first Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers arrived in South Africa in 2002. Furthermore, to enhance its cooperation, the Technical Cooperation Agreement was signed by the both governments in 2011.
Since 1994, it's been nearly 30 years. South Africa remains the biggest economy in Africa. However, the disparity between the rich and the poor in the country still remains the significant challenge. To assist the efforts by the people and the Government of South Africa for achieving sustainable development, JICA is extending its support in line with the Japan's development cooperation policy for the Republic of South Africa, ‘Acceleration of growth and uplifting the living standards of the poor'.
JICA South Africa Office is also in charge of cooperation to the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Kingdom of Lesotho.
JICA is honored to be part of efforts by the people and governments and will continue to promote cooperation to achieve the development goals of respective countries by closely working with the counterparts, mainly partner government departments and agencies of the countries. We will make best use of various types of our supports, namely, Technical Cooperation Project, ODA Loans, Grant Aid, Knowledge Co-creation Program (Training Program), Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and others while strengthening partnership with development partners, NGOs, private sectors, universities and research institutes.
