Tanzania is one of the world's poorest countries, with GNI per capita of 530 US dollars (2010) and poverty rate of 34.0% (2009). Since 2008, soaring prices for raw materials and other factors have led to inflation rate to be over 10 percent. Also, the lowered water level at hydroelectric dams since 2010 has further exacerbated the issue of insufficient supply of electricity, and there are concerns that this may seriously affect economic activities. JICA's support to Tanzania is primarily focused on: 1) economic growth toward poverty reduction, 2) infrastructure development sustaining economic growth and poverty reduction, and 3) improvement of public services to all citizens.
