This exhibit focuses on the Aliança colony, in the western part of the Brazilian state of São Paulo. Immigration began to this region around 1925. In the 1910s, Japanese immigrants in Brazil began to establish Japanese-only colonies, with the goal of gaining their independence by acquiring their own plots of land rather than working as laborers. The Aliança colony was a prominent example of this.
They had the lofty goal of “cultivating people rather than just coffee,” and they worked hard to establish a permanent settlement by clearing forests and farming.
You can see just how large the trees they had to bring down were from the semicircle on the floor. The tree stump and tree painting together form a fun optical illusion if you want to take a photo.
