Japanese immigrants formed a variety of organizations to assist their fellow migrants. The main one was the “Japanese Association.” Japanese Associations organized picnics and athletic meets to bring immigrants closer together, but that’s not all they did. For example, at the turn of the 20th century, Japanese consulates in the United States asked Japanese Associations to issue important documents such as immigration certificates. The associations also organized celebrations for special days such as Japan’s National Foundation Day and the Emperor’s Birthday. In addition to the Japanese Associations, there were also prefectural associations and village associations for people from the same place, shipmate gatherings for those who came together on the same ship, and farming and business groups. These associations not only brought together people with common interests, but also provided the chance for people to share their love of Japanese language and culture, and help one another. They also helped Japanese people to adjust to life in their new country.
