JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program "Maritime Law Enforcement" has started.
On June 19, the Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP) "Maritime Law Enforcement" started. This year, 17 participants from 12 countries; Djibouti, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Micronesia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Samoa, Solomon, and Timor-Leste are participating in.
Participants are getting the new knowledge and skills necessary for maritime law enforcement, including countermeasures against piracy in Asia and Somalia, through lectures, site visits, and practical training. The program also includes lectures on comprehensive anti-piracy measures and international law, table-top training(simulation)for participatory discussions on countermeasures against drugs, smuggling, and human trafficking, visits to air bases, inspections of suspicious vessels, and practical training in forensics, as well as many other subjects that will strengthen law enforcement capabilities at sea.

It is hoped that this program will strengthen coast guard organizations of the participating countries and the capabilities of personnel belonging to coast guard organizations, enhance international human networks, and contribute to regional peace and stability under the "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)" concept.

During the five-week program, participants will attend lectures by Japan Coast Guard officials from the Japan Coast Guard Academy, and the 3rd Regional Coast Guard, board a patrol vessel, and visit the Sumidagawa Shipyard Co.,ltd.. After these lectures or site visits finish, they will make an action plan to improve and enhance operations at their home country's Coast Guard Organization, utilizing their new findings through this program in Japan.
